Survivor Support

Funded in part by the Susan G. Komen Foundation

Breast Friends believes that no woman should have to go through breast cancer treatment alone. We have created three different projects that will assure that this does not happen. All three of these projects have been funded by the Susan G. Komen Foundation.

Volunteer Match Program

The Breast Friends Volunteer Match program offers a wonderful opportunity to give back to the community by introducing newly diagnosed breast cancer patients to a survivor or other compassionate volunteer. Breast Friends’ volunteers help by establishing a personal relationship with a patient for as long as needed, which can be days to several months in duration. Our volunteers will encourage her to reach out to others for support. We also teach family members how to support the patient and offer practical ideas on how to help the patient reduce her trauma of breast cancer diagnosis and treatment. Our volunteer can help her through this difficult time by providing her with emotional, physical, spiritual, and social support.

Whether the patient needs a shoulder to cry on, help with household chores, someone who can listen, perhaps who has been there and understands the fear and loneliness that accompanies a cancer diagnosis, Breast Friends‘ Volunteers will be there when needed most.

First I Cry

Throughout Oregon and S.W. Washington, patients will be identified through many avenues including our new First I Cry program. It is a pink envelope with a printed message of hope and "welcome to the sisterhood." Inside is a silk screened handkerchief with the Breast Friends logo, along with a list of contacts for area support groups. The most important piece inside the packet is a sealed envelope with the instructions to, "Give this to someone who cares." In the sealed envelope is a special message to the potential care-giver about the role they will play in the survival of their friend along with some practical tips on how to help. If the patient indicates that they do not have anyone close enough to give the sealed envelope to, distributing agencies (i.e. medial offices, specialty mastectomy shops, etc.) will ask the patient if it is OK if they contact Breast Friends and be identified as a patient for our Volunteer Match Program. If the patient agrees, a call will be made to our hot-line and a match will be made. We need your help to make sure no woman goes through breast cancer alone.

Caregivers Brochure

For those patients with a strong support team, whose friends find themselves needing ideas, Breast Friends created the Caregiver Brochure. These brochures will be provided to medical facilities in and around the Portland area. This brochure would replicate some of the information that is in the First I Cry packets as well as practical ideas to take care of your self, while taking care of that special friend or relative. Information in the brochure was compiled by survivors and caregivers that have gone through the experience. Remember nothing you do is insignificant and there is no greater love then to give your time to a friend. We need your help as a volunteer whether you’ve had breast cancer or not. If you have the passion to get involved please contact us at mail@breastfriends.

Breast Friends launches H.A.T.S. Project

When Becky Olson, president and Co-founder of Breast Friends, lost her hair to chemotherapy during breast cancer treatment, she thought her world had come to an end. She remembers feeling angry and depressed over something she had no control over. Then one day, her friends Patty and Dennis delivered a crazy hat to her that changed her world once again, for the better.

Becky tells the story of her hat in her book, The Hat That Saved My Life, a story about surviving breast cancer. “For years, I've dreamed of being able to help women going through hair loss from chemo by helping them laugh through the experience”, says Olson. Breast Friends has launched a program to do just that. It is called the H.A.T.S. Project. H.A.T.S. stands for, Healthy Attitude to Survive.

Olson knows the importance of humor in healing and keeping a healthy attitude. “Once I received my crazy little hat, I was able to smile back at my reflection in the mirror. I knew I could do this”, said Olson. Breast Friends began raising money to put toward the program. “It started with seed money from the very same two beautiful people who changed my life with their gift,” Olson said, and she has been adding to it by giving a portion of her speaking fees and book sales to the project. Also, a generous donation from Brighton Collectibles allowed the hats to be embroidered instead of printed. Stu Rude Promotions helped offset some of the costs of the project to make it more affordable in order to help women in need.

“This money has allowed us to create funny little hats that will be given, free of charge, to women going through hair loss from chemo,” said Sharon Henifin, executive director of Breast Friends. Longview artist, Jo Jefre, created the image and donated it for the project.

The hats are free of charge for those in need. However, in order to keep the program available in the future, Breast Friends suggests a $20.00 donation per hat to those who can help. The hats are available in pink or white. Each hat has an image of a bald headed woman, with a rabbit sticking out from behind her head and the phrase, Has anyone seen my hare, adorning the front.

“It took us five years to raise enough money earmarked for 500 hats. We expect them to go quickly,” said Olson. “We would love to find oncology offices that would like to sponsor hats for their patients,” Olson added.

Anne Koopman, a newly diagnosed breast cancer survivor said, “Losing my hair was difficult at first, I thought I was somehow losing my identity as a woman. I learned pretty quickly that I needed something to keep the heat in, or the sun off, my newly shiny dome. The wig was alright for “formal” events, like church and dinner out, but what do I do as I go about life? I felt like scarves signaled “I'm Sick” to the whole world and sort of put up a barrier, a feeling I did not like.

When I first wore “the hat” I experienced a whole new, and unexpected, reaction; both from myself and others. I smiled, I didn't feel sick, I dressed a little nicer and a little bit of bounce returned to my step. Friends laughed with me when they read the inscription. Strangers would steal a glance to see what the hat said, then smile and make eye contact with me, a reaction that I love. My hat tells the world that I'm going to beat this disease and I will be a better person on the other side of this trip.”

you or a loved one is going through chemotherapy and is experiencing hair loss, and you are in need or a hat, or would like to sponsor hats for someone else, please contact Breast Friends at 503-598-8048.
