Breast Friends History and Mission:

Breast Friends was founded in August 2000 by two local Portland breast cancer survivors, Sharon Henifin and Becky Olson. The founders met in 1991 while working together at the same large corporation. In 1993 Sharon was diagnosed with breast cancer. In 1996, Becky was diagnosed with the same. Over the next few years, what the two women came to understand is that friends, though well intentioned, often times don’t know how to help and women end up fighting the disease alone and afraid. Four years later, during a discussion over lunch, the two decided to start a non-profit to aid breast cancer patients by teaching their friends and family members how to offer appropriate help. The name, Breast Friends, was chosen and registered with the state of Oregon. A web-site URL was selected and Breast Friends was born. A bank account was opened with two $50.00 checks donated by each woman from their first speaking engagement. They applied for, and received their 501c3 federal tax exemption in 2001 and their mission of “helping women survive the trauma of breast cancer…one friend at a time,” was underway.

In 2004, Breast Friends received their first grant from the Susan G. Komen Foundation. They have been funded every year since. Komen has also partnered with Breast Friends by inviting them to chair their Co-Survivor Initiative in Oregon at the Race for the Cure®. Breast Friends has been the Co-Survivor chairs since.

To date, Breast Friends has received nearly 400,000 visits to their web-site and the numbers are growing quickly. Their site received the Editor’s Choice Award from healingwell.com. Breast Friends has received e-mails from women all over the country; some asking for assistance in handling their difficult treatments, others offering to volunteer through their “Volunteer Match Program,” and others indicating an interest in starting chapters in their cities. As the organization grows in numbers, thousands of women will continue to be supported and helped through their difficult breast cancer journeys.

Testimonials

"Losing my hair was difficult at first, I thought I was somehow losing my identity as a woman. I learned pretty quickly that I needed something to keep the heat in, or the sun off, my newly shiny dome. The wig was alright for "formal" events, like church and dinner out, but what do I do as I go about life? I felt like scarves signaled "I'm Sick" to the whole world and sort of put up a barrier, a feeling I did not like.
When I first wore "the hat" I experienced a whole new, and unexpected, reaction; both from myself and others. I smiled, I didn't feel sick, I dressed a little nicer and a little bit of bounce returned to my step. Friends laughed with me when they read the inscription. Strangers would steal a glance to see what the hat said, then smile and make eye contact with me, a reaction that I love. My hat tells the world that I'm going to beat this disease and I will be a better person on the other side of this trip."
